Dear OUSD Board of Education,
Oakland teachers are the lowest compensated of all Bay Area educators. Yet, our students deserve the most qualified teachers in their classrooms each and every day. While the budget crisis continues to loom, and the proposed 2010-2011 OUSD budget eliminates 505 full time positions, the only way we can increase teacher salaries without cutting more jobs is a parcel tax.
A $25 million parcel tax would translate into a 5 percent raise for all public school teachers in Oakland, with 80 percent of funds raised supporting district public school teachers and support staff. Our community should get to decide if we want our teachers to be paid more – we do.
A parcel tax is the single largest, most immediate, and least controversial source of revenue that can be applied to employee compensation. OUSD needs to be able to recruit, hire, and retain excellent teachers for our students – NOW.
Please put a parcel tax to increase teacher compensation on the November 2010 ballot.
OAKLAND TEACHERS AND STUDENTS DESERVE BETTER!

| 13 | 05/13/11 | Lisa Cartolano | Oakland | CA | The cuts to education need to stop. Now. We need MORE funding for education. The children of today will be the citizens of tomorrow and it would be much better to have well educated and participatory citizens in our future. As a home owner I fully support the parcel tax. FUND EDUCATION NOW! |
| 12 | 03/27/11 | Cynthea Douglas | San Leandro | CA | I am highly upset about the pink slips. My son is loving his teacher and i am a parent that is active in the schools! How can they do this ! ? These children need these teachers! They have a right to stay employed. Has me so mad at those in charge! We must fight back for the future of Oakland's kids!!! |
| 11 | 07/24/10 | Anonymous | San Luis Obispo | CA | As a person, as a daughter, as an older sister, as a college student, as a stranger, I strongly am an advocate for education. We should never let education be cut. |

Public education is a corner stone of our democracy and our children are our future. What could be more important! |

| 3 | 06/15/10 | Anonymous | Oakland | CA | As an Oakland business owner, resident and educator, I strongly support a parcel tax to increase teacher compensation. Give residents an opportunity to support all teachers. It's also very fair for charter schools to receive proportional proceeds. After all, they are public schools and serve our Oakland children. |
| 2 | 06/14/10 | Amanda Klein | Oakland | CA | As an Oakland home owner and educator, I am interested in seeing Board, district, and community leaders take action to support a parcel tax to increase teacher compensation. I support a percentage of the parcel tax going to charter public school teachers since they serve Oakland students and families, too. As a founding teacher at Think College Now and former teacher at Lockwood and in the Ravenswood City School District, I know from first hand experience how important it is that classrooms are staffed with great teachers. Your leadership on this issue would make it possible for Oakland district and charter public schools to attract and retain the talent they need to support our incredible students. |
| 1 | 06/14/10 | Erika Abelon | Oakland | CA | We all need to come together to support this parcel tax - it's for our teachers and our students! |
